Gatehouse - Tewksbury Abbey
Standing guard over Tewkesbury Abbey, this grand building of around 1500 is Listed Grade 1 and has only one room approached by a steep spiral staircase. We visited in the autumn of 2023 and found it a perfect location to explore interesting Tewkesbury and the countryside around.
In the Landmark Brochure it describes the Accommodation this way -"The Gatehouse has only one room, a very fine one on the first floor. At one end of this we have built a gallery, rather like an organ case. Inside there is everything you need but do not want to see and on its top you sleep, close under the moulded beams of the roof, painted the same colours as the vault of the abbey choir. The soaring west window of the Abbey rises only a few yards from your door, as you dwell in the 'lodging over the great gate.'
As someone said in the guestbook "Like staying in our own miniature castle. Very atmospheric, beautifully maintained and within a few minutes' walk of Tewkesbury town centre, which is simply stunning. A roaring log fire (take your own logs) and toasty warm with the storage heaters as well. Right next door to the Abbey (obvs!). What's not to love?"
This is a splendid entrance route to our accommodation and to private houses associated with the Abbey
These grand arched gates are fine features and we pass through them to reach our rather insignificant front door
Once inside the front door we were immediately met with a circular "lighthouse style staircase". 43 steps
and then the double curve straightened
Once up we went through the internal door and we were in the beautiful lounge
This was a particularly comfortable Landmark Trust for two people
The kitchen was at one end of the room with the bedroom on top. The kitchen had a full display of Old Chelsea Crockery
As just explained, the bedroom was located on a tier above the kitchen and bathroom. It was completely open to the living space in balcony style and we were up at ceiling level.
Just by the front of The Gatehouse can be found a short pathway which leads directly to TEWKESBURY ABBEY
To the rear of the property there are private grounds belonging to the Church House
