Spitalfields London

Spitalfields Market is famous for its rich and diverse history of traders dating back all the way to 1197. Nowadays, the market is famous for its artists, goods, designer stores, outdoor events, street food and modern cafes, restaurants and bars. Do you know? It even had a shack selling "build your own" fruit crumble!

What's not to like about that....

A lot of you have asked where we have stayed whilst doing our Thames walk and its been a mixture of hotels and guest houses but 2 cottages have been used, one a National Trust lock keepers cottage and this fine Landmark Trust house which we occupied in mid November to walk through London following the Thames Trail. Princelet Street in East London.

Have a look at our pictures.

This is an  elegant four storey home.

These are not grand buildings but they are dignified and well-proportioned. They provided their early inhabitants with room both to live and work. The house came to the Landmark Trust  as a generous bequest from its last owner, Peter Lerwill, who had lovingly restored it. The building retains much of its original floor plan and fabric, most notably its simple panelling, partitions and other joinery.

This quiet street is just steps away from the sights and sounds of an interesting (and now fashionable) part of London. This spacious house reflects its 18th-century roots but provides a welcoming home and a most comfortable retreat for us.

This is our street, quiet and calm, away from the bustle just around the corner.

This one picture sums up the style of the accommodation. Good paintwork, polished floor boards, clean linen. etc

What a lovely town garden.
Brick Lane with its fine curry restaurant selection is just down the street.

Poppies Fish and Chips shop is around the corner.  Top Notch and very famous.

This advert is from Poppys  website

Fish and chips are fun, a guilty pleasure and a Great British old fashioned classic. The tempting aroma of the salt and vinegar draws you in and the crunch of the batter on the fish or the crisp on the chips is irresistible.

At Poppies we do things properly. Whether it is the sourcing of ingredients or the presentation we follow the course the Captain of the ship Pops set us on back in 1952.

The city is fast and Poppies is the escape. A nostalgic throw back in time with memorabilia, music and chatter alongside good old fashioned food served with care and love.

We are welcoming and we are a community.

For a treat after work, a family dinner or a cheeky take away. For mouth tingling, lip smacking, ketchup pouring, gravy drowning indulgence we are the experts at all things fish and chips.

Well, we didn't slum it at all as there is a gas fired heating system.

and white fluffy towels

and a gas fire in the lounge fire

and oodles of hot water

and cushioned window seats.

Well done the Landmark Trust. We are pleased to support you by booking this property on your portfolio.

This house made a most comfortable home for our happy march along the Thames.

I quote from the Landmark Trust Property detail on this property

Thanks to the generosity of Peter Lerwill, a great succession of Landmarkers now share the experience of living for a while in this extraordinary part of London, part of the City yet distinct from it.
