Beverley Minster Yorkshire

Some years ago, my late wife and I camped with our local cycling club at the CTC Birthday Rides in Beverley. Our base was the university complex but my lasting memory was of us all taking our bikes to the Minster when the Archbishop of York blessed the hundreds of bikes that were brought along by attendees of the event. It was a grand and colourful experience and reset our senses in the magnificent building.

Our visit in 2023 was by a double decker bus from York on a day return with a self organised trip. It did not disappoint but whereas in York, the Minster was packed with tourists, we had Beverley Minster almost to ourselves.

Our stay at a National Trust cottage behind York Minster can be found here

Beverley Minster is arguably the most lovely Gothic building in England.

The church is 393 feet long, making it longer than many English cathedrals.

The twin transepts are unusual, as is the fact that the main transepts are so large that they have aisles on both the east and west sides.

The minster is famous for its carvings of medieval musical instruments. There are over 70 such carvings, illustrating instruments that are familiar to modern viewers, but also a variety of unusual medieval instruments. Among the carvings are depictions of bagpipes, flutes, pipes, organs, tambourines, shawms, cymbals, trumpets, lutes, and more.

A visit to Beverley Minster is a wonderful experience and I hope this series of pictures has encouraged those who haven't been there to put it on their bucket list.
