Somerset ~ The Churches Conservation Trust
Take a closer look at two churches in the same village
St Mary Magdalen, Stocklinch, Somerset
This beautiful church is a real find and its gable front showing from the approach path gives the best view of these 3 pully bells which are exposed and viewable. it really is amazing that such a small isolated village has two churches within a mile of each other. This church has stood in this location for 700 years.
Why has this small village got 2 churches? I don't know but I love the old folk tale that there were two legendary sisters who both fell in love with the vicar and each built a church for his benefit.
Lucky vicar!
On arrival at the porch door, we realised we were not alone.
Someone had taken up residence.
and this closer view shows the full length of this slender bird which I guess could be a swallow or swift or perhaps a house martin.
Perhaps it has specially flown in from Africa to mate in the porchway in this church, like it does each year.
House martins will return from their African wintering grounds to the same nesting sites each year. They can reuse their old nests, saving them about ten day's work collecting mud.
This wonderful piece of visual nature is inspiring but, of course, mummy has to clean the bedroom regularly.
We are near Chard where Henry the Hoover is made but this bird seems hellbent on throwing mess out onto the floor!
Moving over the obstacle, step inside this magnificent church bedecked with flowers, dusted and looking all prim and proper. This may be a redundant church but it is well loved within the village.
Below - A simple scene but with a superb set of organ pipes.
We are revisiting this church and will upgrade the images as we try and capture the tranquillity and beauty of this historic building.
