A Collection of Churches near home in
West Somerset/East Devon
taken and processed during Covid Lockdown.
I have tried to emphasise the beautiful architectural features in each building. They are much loved and valued by us locals and in particular by those who take much spiritual sustenance from their presence.
This attractive 15th century church stands high on a hill above the villages of Burlescombe and Westleigh on the Devon/ Somerset Border.
Notes suggest the inside is worth exploring because - to quote "Mysteries of St Mary’s Church. What is the point of a staircase in the tower if it doesn’t reach the ground? When and why was the church built? Why was it altered?
These and many other mysteries have been researched by David Beard and Harry Norton and their findings published by The Burlescombe and Westleigh History Group. I have yet to research this.
... and another view with its postage stamp-sized plot with two streams abutting the graveyard. Access to the church is via a small bridge.
This church is close by to where I live but I cannot get an angle or photographic tone that I like. Here are some samples
Here are 3 alternatives - slightly less gritty for discussion
