Old Father Thames

The River Thames is part of the longest river in England, it has 45 locks, is home to over 25 species of fish, boasts three areas of outstanding natural beauty and it’s the only river in Europe to have a national trail follow its entire length.

Starting as a trickle in the Cotswold Hills the River Thames travels 210 miles into the North Sea. On its way it flows through some picturesque towns and villages and also through the City of London with its well known cityscape.

If you would  like to get a feel for the style of route and its beautiful landscapes, have a look at this website produced by Natural England. WALK THE THAMES

To Summarise, during our walking week, we saw for ourselves the dreaming spires of Oxford, walked through flower-filled water meadows, passed idyllic villages of thatched cottages, inviting riverside inns where we watched the boats pass through locks, sometimes filled with drama, colour and noise. Not forgetting  the wildlife, red kites were our constant companions and ducks and swans were producing youngsters. In fact the places just rolled off the pages of Jerome K Jerome's novels.

Winston Churchill said that "The Thames is no ordinary waterway, it is the golden thread of our nations' history"
